History of the Shelsley Walsh Hill Climb

Shelsley Walsh indeed holds a special place in motorsport history. Located in Worcestershire, England, Shelsley Walsh has been hosting hill climb events since 1905. This makes it the oldest motorsport venue in the world that continues to use its original course, predating other iconic circuits like Indianapolis (opened in 1909), Le Mans (first 24 Hours race in 1923), and Monza (opened in 1922).

The endurance of Shelsley Walsh is remarkable, especially considering the changes and developments in motorsport over the past century. While many historical circuits have closed or undergone significant alterations, Shelsley Walsh has maintained its traditional format. The venue’s ability to blend its rich heritage with modern motorsport is a testament to its enduring appeal and significance in the racing community.

Brooklands, the world’s first purpose-built motor racing circuit, opened in 1907 but ceased racing activities in 1939 due to the Second World War and never fully resumed. In contrast, Shelsley Walsh has continued to thrive, offering a direct link to the early days of motorsport while remaining relevant and engaging for contemporary motorsport enthusiasts.
